Lipoma & Sarcoma

These are growths that are deep to the skin, arising from cells which produce collagen, cartilage, and blood vessels. Lipomas are fairly common, and some people can have multiple lipomas throughout their body. These are benign, but can be uncomfortable and unsightly, in which case removal is warranted.

Sarcomas are cancerous growths which are uncommon but can occur in any part of the body. These require immediate attention, but can be difficult to distinguish from non-dangerous lumps such as lipoma. Expert evaluation is therefore required.

Diagnosing soft tissue tumours involves a combination of physical examination, imaging studies and, if required, biopsy. During the physical examination, I assess the size, location, and characteristics of the tumour. Imaging studies, such as CR or MRI scans, help to determine the tumour’s location, size, and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. A biopsy, where a small sample of the tumour is taken for microscopic examination, is crucial for confirming the type of tumour and its malignancy.

For benign tumours, treatment might involve observation or surgical removal if the tumour is causing discomfort or other symptoms. For sarcomas, surgery is usually first-line treatment. The goal is to remove the entire tumour with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal. Depending on the tumour’s size and location, this might involve a more extensive procedure. In some cases, reconstructive surgery may be necessary to restore function and appearance. Dr George discusses complex cases with colleagues including medical oncologists, radiologists and pathologists. This helps obtain consensus treatment recommendations.
