An inguinal hernia can be a painful and even life-threatening condition. One of my specialty interests is in the diagnosis and treatment of inguinal hernias, helping patients return to their daily activities safely and comfortably.
What is an Inguinal Hernia?
An inguinal hernia occurs when part of your abdominal tissue or intestines pushes through a weak spot near the ‘inguinal canal’ in the lower abdominal wall, creating a bulge in the groin or scrotum area. These hernias are more common in men than women, but can occur in any age and gender. Predisposing factors include:
- Heavy lifting 💪
- Chronic coughing
- Straining during bowel movements
- Previous abdominal surgeries
The bulge might seem small at first but can increase in size over time, especially if left untreated
Common Symptoms of an Inguinal Hernia
It’s important to know the signs of an inguinal hernia so you can seek help early. Symptoms may include:
- A visible bulge in your groin or lower abdomen, especially when standing or straining,
- Discomfort or pain when coughing, bending over, or lifting objects,
- Weakness or pressure in the groin area,
- A heavy or dragging sensation in the groin, and
- Painful urinary or intercourse (less commonly)
In some cases, hernias can become trapped or “incarcerated,” cutting off blood supply to the intestine—a condition that requires emergency surgery. If you experience severe pain, nausea, vomiting, or redness around the bulge, seek immediate medical attention.
How is an Inguinal Hernia Treated?
Your Surgical Options:
Open Hernia Repair: A traditional method where the hernia is repaired through an incision in the groin.
Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Surgery: A minimally invasive approach that uses small incisions and a camera for quicker recovery and less scarring.
Although there has been much debate about which approach is ‘better’, I am able to offer either approach. My view is that each are highly effective, but the character and degree of your hernia, and other medical considerations you might have, might make one approach preferrable to the other.
Why You Shouldn’t Ignore an Inguinal Hernia.
While some inguinal hernias may seem harmless at first, they won’t go away on their own. Over time, untreated hernias can lead to complications such as bowel obstruction or strangulation, which can be life-threatening.
The sooner you address the issue, the better your chances of a smooth recovery and avoiding unnecessary discomfort or risks
