As a surgeon practicing in Northern Sydney, I frequently consult with patients regarding the long-term management of breast implants. A critical aspect of maintaining breast health and ensuring the longevity of implants is consistent, professional surveillance. Annual breast implant surveillance is not merely a recommendation; it is an essential component of post-operative care designed to monitor implant integrity and detect potential issues, such as a silent rupture, at the earliest possible stage.
Understanding Breast Implant Rupture
Breast implants are medical devices that, over time, can undergo wear and tear. While modern implants are highly durable, they are not impervious to rupture. A rupture can be either symptomatic or ‘occult’ (silent). A symptomatic rupture is often accompanied by noticeable changes in the breast’s shape or feel, and may cause pain and swelling. A silent rupture, however, presents no overt symptoms, making it impossible to detect without diagnostic imaging. This is particularly relevant for silicone gel implants, where the gel can remain contained within the fibrous capsule surrounding the implant, a condition known as intracapsular rupture. Without regular surveillance, a silent rupture may go undetected for an extended period, which might lead to local symptoms or unexplained systemic compromise such as fatigue, ‘brain fog’ and confusion, chest tightness and autoimmune-like syndromes.
The Role of Diagnostic Imaging in Surveillance
The gold standard for breast implant surveillance is a combination of clinical examination and diagnostic imaging. I recommend that all patients with breast implants undergo regular clinical review. This can be supplemented by ultrasound and/or mammograms. IN cases where rupture and other potential breast conditions are suspected, an MRI can be highly informative.
My Approach to Breast Implant Surveillance
My aim is to provide a comprehensive and personally tailored evaluation and management. During a consultation, I conduct a thorough physical examination, discuss any concerns you may have, and arrange appropriate imaging studies. Should a rupture be detected, I am equipped with the surgical expertise to perform an explantation (implant removal) or implant exchange, tailoring the procedure to your specific needs and goals. If a removal (without replacement) is desired, the breast can be re-shaped or ‘lifted’ during the procedure to minimise a droopy, deflated appearance.
My aim is to ensure your safety and provide you with confidence in the health and aesthetic outcome of your implants. If you have breast implants and have not had a recent surveillance check, or if you are concerned about your breast health, I encourage you to seek a professional evaluation. Proactive monitoring is the most effective strategy for the long-term management of your implants.
