Let’ Talk Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

Keeping Your Skin Healthy in Northern Sydney: Let’s Talk Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer

This post will cover non melanoma skin cancer. It’s a topic we all need to be a little aware of, especially with our beautiful Aussie sunshine.

Understanding the Basics of Skin Cancer (The Non-Melanoma Kind)

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most common type of skin cancer. The term “skin cancer” can sound a bit worrying, but the good news is that non-melanoma types are generally the less aggressive kind.

NMSC emerges due to mutations in the regular skin cells, called keratinocytes. Risk factors include chronic sun (UV) exposure, increasing age, and immunosuppression. They can also arise in areas which have been chronically inflamed, irritated or scarred.

NMSC includes basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which also have early (pre-invasive) counterparts such as Bowen’s disease and other Actinic lesions.

So long as we detect and treat these early, outcomes are generally good.

What Little Clues Should You Watch Out For on Your Skin?

It really pays to get to know your own skin well. Although I find that people are focussed on their moles and other pigmented lesions, NMSC have a different appearance.

So keep an out eye for:

  • A new lump that looks a bit pearly or shiny
  • A flat patch that feels rough or scaly to the touch
  • A spot that’s a bit red and firm
  • A sore that bleeds easily and just doesn’t seem to heal up properly
  • An area that looks like a scar or an ulcer, but you don’t recall having traumatised the area
  • They often have a red or purple hue

Non Melanoma Skin Cancer Clues

These things can pop up pretty much anywhere on your body, but they’re most common on the bits that get the most sun – think your face, head, neck, hands, and arms.

If you think you might have any of these, get it checked out. A check is painless and can be as quick as 10 minutes.

How We Tackle Non Melanoma Skin Cancer Right Here in Northern Sydney

The good news is, we’ve got some really effective ways to deal with non melanoma skin cancer. In my Northern Sydney clinics, my colleagues and I can take a good look and have a chat about what the best plan is for you. This might involve a simple surgical removal, freezing it off (cryotherapy), or even some creams you put on the skin. We’ll figure out what works best for your individual situation and your specific skin cancer.

Why Early Detection of Skin Cancer Matters

Catching skin cancer early makes a huge difference in the treatment options available and the overall outcome. Smaller spots are generally easier to treat and less likely to cause bigger problems down the track. So, if you notice something that doesn’t look quite right, don’t put it off!

Treatment

If you or your GP have noticed a worrying spot, I’m here to help. I will examine areas of concern and can offer on the spot biopsy and treatment. The good news is, if non melanoma skin cancer is detected early, surgical excision is curative and other forms of treatment are not required.

Give my clinic a call to book a skin check. Let’s put your mind at ease. (https://www.drrobertgeorge.com.au/make-enquiry/)
